To join the Legion of Mary is to become part of a spiritual army fighting beneath the standard of Mary for the salvation of souls using the powerful weapons of prayer and charitable works.

ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP

Active Members of the Legion of Mary become instruments of the Holy Spirit through a balanced program of prayer and service. They are sanctified and formed through a weekly meeting. From the meeting is received the grace to be sent out two by two to assigned work aimed at the saving of souls. This work is carried out through, with, in and for Mary who has the desire and the means of forming souls into the likeness of her Son, Jesus. Works include welcoming new parish families, visiting the bereaved, praying the rosary with the homebound and nursing home residents, Catholic education, supporting the newly baptized and married couples, and meeting any other spiritual needs of the parish community under the guidance of a spiritual director named by the pastor.

LEGION OF MARY-JUNIORS

Are you looking for a way to grow and learn more about your faith? Calling boys and girls aged 10-18 to join the Legions group of junior members!

Our meetings were discontinued due to the pandemic and have been in hiatus statue for 2 and 1/2 years. Meetings resumed this past September 18th from 10-11:30am in the St Mary rectory basement. There is an outside entrance nearest the church.

We pray the rosary and discuss church topics presently in the news. Apostolic work is required which may include making rosaries, joining the folk group to sing or play an instrument, volunteering as altar servers, or helping smaller children with various programs during the school year.

Anyone and everyone is welcome to join us. If interested or in need of more information, please contact Sharon DiNapoli at 203-799-8670.

AUXILIARY MEMBERSHIP

Auxiliary Members supply prayer power which is needed for the Active works of the Legion. Auxiliary Members pray the Rosary daily along with a few other prayers contained in the Legion’s prayer card called a Tessera.

To learn more about the Legion of Mary or about becoming a member, call the number(s) listed at right, or stop by either of our weekly meetings to say hello.

Five First Saturdays Devotion

Mother Mary herself asked that the faithful keep the "Five First Saturdays Devotion." It consists in going to Confession, receiving Communion, reciting five decades of the Rosary and meditating for a quarter of an hour on the mysteries of the Rosary on the first Saturday of five consecutive months to assist in the salvation of sinners everywhere. In return she promises special graces to those who keep this devotion. Click here to download a PDF with more information and consider trying this devotion in your life and help Mother Mary bring souls to Jesus.

The Legion of Mary held its 34th annual Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Lourdes in Litchfield on September 9, 2023. This annual pilgrimage is intentionally scheduled as a reunion gathering near the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (September 8) and is sponsored by the New Haven and Waterbury regional Legion councils and directed by Bruce Loughran. The Shrine is a replica of the Grotto in Lourdes, France built by two Montfort Brothers and was dedicated in 1958.

This year Legion members attended from all over the state to celebrate our Heavenly Mother’s birthday, hailing from Enfield, Stamford, Windsor, Northford, North Haven, Bristol, Plainville, Waterbury and Milford including six Legionaries representing Precious Blood Parish. God provided beautiful weather for the day’s events which started with the Rosary followed by Confessions, a procession with each group proudly carrying their banners, and outdoor Mass. The Mass was concelebrated by Father Don LaSalle and Father Bill Cunningham of the Montfort Missionaries, and Father John Golas, Pastor of St. Jeanne Jugan parish in Enfield, CT. During the homily Father reminded us that whenever we call upon Mary, she points to Jesus. After lunch and Legion traditional prayers Father James Sullivan, Pastor of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Waterbury, gave a special talk on the five main ways people are converted to the Catholic faith. The day concluded with Stations of the Cross, Benediction and blessing of religious articles. All the men, women and children in attendance enjoyed the camaraderie and the weather as they joined voices to reaffirm a commitment to help Mary our Queen bring souls to Christ. “Pray for us, oh Holy Mother of God, that we may grow every day closer to you and be a reflection of your most glorious virtues.”

VEXILLUM LEGIONIS
THE STANDARD OF THE LEGION

Symbolism of the Vexillum Legionis

The Vexillum Legionis, or Standard of the Legion, is surmounted by a dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit. Beneath the dove a cross-bar reads “Legio Mariae” (Legion of Mary). This cross-bar is joined by a lily and rose to an oval representing the Immaculate Conception, similar to a Miraculous Medal. These are set upon a staff that is rooted in the globe. The whole design conveys the idea that the world is to be conquered by the Holy Spirit acting through Mary and her children.
